Latte Love + Milk Frother Recipes (1)

Do you remember the first time you tried a latte? Way, way back in my early 20’s, when I had my children’s clothing business, my husband and I stopped at a coffee shop on our way home from a business meeting. It was a longtime dream of mine to sell my designs at a boutique in the city, and the owner had just agreed to carry a large part of my collection. Needless to say, we were elated (and a bit relieved). So, instead of heading straight home, we decided to celebrate with a fancy coffee.

It’s funny looking back on it now. That coffee shop was Starbucks and it was the first time either of us had ever tried a latte or cappuccino. Spending that much on two coffees was a big splurge for us.

To this day, that moment has stuck with me. I can picture the green velvet chairs we sat on with rustic coffee table between, oversized mugs we slowly sipped from, all while listening to the coffee house music playing in the background. It felt a bit surreal.

Maybe that’s why I have a fondness for lattes to this day. That, and the fact that they taste so darn good!

What Else Can You Make with a Milk Frother?

Golden Milk

Another hot drink I enjoy in the afternoon or evening is steamed and frothed oat milk (1½ cups) with honey (¾ teaspoon), turmeric (¾ teaspoon), cinnamon (¼ teaspoon) and black pepper (pinch). Let it steep for at least 5 minutes before sipping.

It’s quick to make, helps with inflammation, and is so tasty. You should give it a try!

Sometimes I mix it up a bit with coconut milk, cardamom, maple syrup and ginger. Play around with ingredients until you find a blend you love.

Steamed Cinnamon Milk

It doesn’t get any simpler than heated and frothed milk of your choice, natural sweetener, cinnamon and pure vanilla extract. I love this caffeine-free drink as an afternoon snack, especially on chilly days. Again, come up with your own measurements to suit your taste preference.

FAQs

How much milk do you put in a latte frother? ›

For fill level, try going to just below where the spout starts to form. In these size pitchers, that'll get you about 5 or 6 ounces, enough for a large latte. If that's too much, you can go with less, but you probably don't want to add more as the milk will expand when frothed.

Why is my milk frother not frothing enough? ›

You can try heating the milk and removing the extra cream before frothing it. The fresher the milk, the better the froth. This is something we have observed over the months. Milk that has been stored for long, tends to not froth or even bubble.

What is the best milk to froth for a latte? ›

Whole milk or 2% milk are better options for steaming and frothing, as they contain enough fat to produce a creamy and smooth texture. If you are looking for non-dairy alternatives, it is best to use soy milk, almond milk, or oat milk.

What is the ratio of coffee to milk in a latte? ›

The milk-to-coffee ratio in a latte is usually around 3:1 or 4:1. This results in a smooth and silky texture with a subtle coffee flavor.

How much milk do I froth for 2 shots of espresso? ›

Milk to espresso ratio for a latte

We recommend using a 20g double shot of espresso at a 1:2 ratio resulting in 40g (1.4 ounces) of espresso extraction. We will top off our espresso with 230 – 240g (8.1 ounces) of milk resulting in a 9.5 – 9.9 ounce latte!

Should I froth milk warm or cold? ›

Fill the steaming jug 1/3 full of cold fresh milk. The fresher the milk the better it froths, the colder the milk the better it also steams. If possible keep your steaming jug chilled. Warm, hot or old milk will not froth.

What are the milk proportions for a latte? ›

What is the best liquid for frothing? ›

Whole Milk: Whole milk reigns supreme when frothed thanks to the sugar, fat, water and protein that makes it up. When whole milk is frothed, small micro bubbles begin to form, giving the milk a lovely creaminess without being too over-the-top.

How do you froth milk to make it creamy? ›

Here's how to do that:
  1. Start with cold milk and a cold pitcher (jug)
  2. Purge your steam wand to get rid of any residual water or buildup.
  3. Fill the pitcher with milk up to the start of the spout.
  4. Submerge the tip of the steam wand below the surface of the milk and froth until the pitcher feels warm.

What percent milk is best for frothing? ›

2% Milk: Froths easily with a less airy foam and has some fat for a richer flavor than skim milk. Whole Milk: Froths easily and has a rich, full flavor that delivers a more authentic coffeehouse result.

What makes milk froth better? ›

To strike a balance, you can use milk that is over 5% fat to create a froth that is both thick, stable and voluminous. Breve, anyone? The proteins in milk are whey and casein—both of which help create the froth.

What happens if you froth milk too long? ›

Pulling air into steamed milk is a very quick process, taking only a few seconds to create that perfect texture. If you take longer, you'll create larger bubbles that will weigh down your milk and ruin your foam.

Is a latte just coffee with frothed milk? ›

A latte or caffè latte is a milk coffee that is a made up of one or two shots of espresso, steamed milk and a final, thin layer of frothed milk on top.

How to get silky milk with milk frother? ›

Texturing milk

Raise the jug up a few centimetres and position it so that the steam wand is near to the jug's side and below the milk's surface. Then, angle the jug slightly. This should cause a whirlpool-like effect inside the container that will break down bubbles and create denser, smoother foam.

Can you mix coffee with a milk frother? ›

A milk frother can be handy for making a heap of coffee drinks such as cappuccino, mocha, latte, dalgona coffee, flat white, iced latte, and then the list goes on!

Do you need to steam milk for latte? ›

Frothed milk, on the other hand, creates large air bubbles that result in a big mound of fluffy foam that can sit on top of your coffee. One isn't better than the other - it comes down to your personal preference. However, if your goal is to get a creamy texture, steaming milk is the way to go!
