Super easy onion gravy recipe using Bisto and it’s PERFECT for pouring all over your bangers and mash!

I make no apologies for just how simple, quick and cheat-y this recipe is.

Sometimes I want onion gravy and I want it ready in just minutes I don’t want to faff and wait for it to simmer and bubble away to perfection.

I just want to slop it on my sausages and dribble it over my cheat-y Aunt Bessie Yorkshire puddings.

If you fancy making your own, here’s the ‘cough’ recipe! I usually use the ‘posh’ Bisto… you know, the beef one in the glass jar!

  • Chopping board
  • Knife
  • Weighing scales (or just estimate the amount of butter)
  • Saucepan
  • Teaspoon
  • Cooking spoon

You’ll literally just need three ingredients and some boiling water to make our tasty, rich onion sauce

  • 30g Butter
  • 1 Red Onion
  • 300ml Boiling Water

Step One – prepare the onions ready to make gravy

  • Peel and slice the red onion into half moons – you can do this as thin or as thick as you like.

Step Two – fry the onions in butter

  • Melt the butter in a saucepan over a medium heat until it just starts to sizzle.

  • Tip in the red onions slices.

  • Gently fry the onions over a medium heat until they’re softened – stir often so they don’t stick.

Step Three – make up the Bisto gravy

  • When the onions are almost done – add 4 tsp of Bisto Gravy Granules to a measuring jug

  • Pour in 300ml of boiling water onto the Bisto Gravy Granules and stir until all the granules are dissolved.

Step Four – mix the onions and gravy together

  • When your red onions are cooked through – slowly pour the gravy into the saucepan with the fried onions.

  • Return the pan to the hob and continue to stir over a low heat until everything is mixed together and the gravy starts to thicken slightly.

  • The easy onion gravy is ready to serve when it’s thickened slightly.
