Having to listen to their entire back catalog as Spotify on phones won't let you listen to one album, which is allowing me to reconnect with some of their other stuff, i'm be buying it when i get home.

Also Spotify are playing it very loose with how long they think 30 minutes is

Even with the b-sides and extra tracks, it makes a great double album.

Yah, but the B-sides are mastered too loud. At least it sounded that way listening on Tidal through headphones. I will reserve final judgment until my blue vinyl arrives. Really looking forward to that and also when the cassette of sessions leaks...

I've not dug into the remaster of the main album yet, but the b-sides sound amazing to my ears. Studio Big Boots (calling it Man of War feels so weird) is an all-time great to me. I like studio Lift, but I was never someone as obsessed with Lift as others were, and Big Boots was always my white whale of the OK tracks that hadn't gotten studio cuts.

Also, good god, that climax on Polyethylene -- incredible.

Ed's guitar tones on Manowar and Lift are horrid. Lift is pure DI for the cleans – barely even an amp in there. Strange to hear for a guy who's usually all tone, no content (so to speak). Then Johnny does something in the right channel and his tone is perfect. Sucks.

It's the free version. If your using it on a phone you are only allowed to shuffle an artist with 5 skips per hour. If you use a Tablet or PC you can listen to whatever with unlimited skips (unfortunately my tablet is on it's last legs and i can't get the app on my work PC). Both versions have ads (there's an ad that says you get 30mins of music ad free if you watch said ad, which you have to watch, then 10mins later you get it again )

I refuse to pay them to basically rent music, i'd much rather use it to find music and then buy it (preferably direct from the artist) so those problems are just part of the deal :)

So, is the remaster of the actual album "different"? Does it feel like you are listening to it again from a new perspective?

So, is the remaster of the actual album "different"? Does it feel like you are listening to it again from a new perspective?

I've been listening to the 24 bit version and I think it sounds great. It feels clearer, more present without blowing up volume levels. I think it's pretty clear if you pay attention to the kick drum. You can really hear the full range of it. I listened to it twice in full on my ATH-M50X headphones. I definitely hear a difference without destroying the original feel and tone. There was an initial lossless rip going around before the official release that sounded a little harsher. But when my 24 bit arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to discover it was really just a sh*tty rip and the actual remaster was much smoother. I'm just glad they didn't destroy it with overblown volume like the Deftones remasters. Man, did they f*ck those records up.

I decided on this. Took until this remaster to come to this conclusion. Note that you have to (re-)do the segues for this to go properly, or use that Spotify playlist that had the 'cropped' versions of Airbag and PA.

01. Fitter Happier
02. Palo Alto
03. Paranoid Android
04. Polyethylene
05. Exit Music
06. Airbag
07. Karma Police
08. Electioneering

10. Lucky
11. The Tourist

Skip over the initial "but where is ____?!" reaction and just do it.

Airbag
Paranoid Android
Subterranean Homesick Alien

- I Promise
Exit Music (For a Film)

Let Down
- Polyethylene (Parts 1 & 2)
Karma Police
- Lift
- Meeting in the Aisle

- Melatonin
- Man of War
Electioneering
- How I Made Millions

Climbing Up the Walls

Most mixes from the OKC album sessions have Ed's guitar panned to the right. It's Thom's guitar you're hearing on "Lift" with the super clean ringy clang on the left, then Ed's with the tubey warm tone on the right. And when all three of them are playing guitars at once in this era, it's Johnny's guitar panned left, the inverse of their positions onstage from the audience's perspective. Usually I just flip my headphones around when I listen, now, because I'm so used to hearing them the other way around from live recordings and later albums.

Exceptions: Hard-panned acoustics on the right and left in "Let Down" and "Karma Police" are both Thom, Ed's in the centre.

On "Lull" and "Meeting in the Aisle", the image is flipped back to the normal audience perspective (Ed left, Johnny right).

Johnny also overdubbed a lead guitar track in the centre of "The Tourist" and in the right channels of "Man of War" & "Pearly*".

Question for anyone with the Ok Computer special edition. The download that was included of the tape, was there a 24 bit download or just standard 16 bit?

I ask because I found someone with a split up 24/96 copy of the tape and wanted to know if it was legit or not. I found both 16 and 24 bit copies. If the 24 bit download was an actual option, then I'll keep the files I found. Dunno if it's BS or not, wanted to make sure it wasn't some crappy upconvert.

That's why I've been trying to hunt the best quality file from the download that came with it. The download is a pure signal and not lo-fi like the tape. I wanted that baby in the best possible quality. I heard a rip of the tape and you have the noise/artifacts/frequency drawbacks from the format.

Also from what I read, the vinyl was pressed from the hi-res files.

Thom Yorke is reissuing Tomorrow's Modern Boxes on vinyl and CD on December 8th. Shame he didn't include the bonus track "Youwouldn'tlikemewhenI'mangry" that was for sale on his Bandcamp page. Thought it was strange when the album and bonus track were pulled from his Bandcamp. Here's hoping we get a 24 bit digital copy. "Youwouldn'tlikemewhenI'mangry" was available in 24 bit where as the album was 16 bit. I actually quite love this album along with The Eraser. I was a bit disappointed with AMOK, it was a bit too Radiohead-ish. Kinda similar to The King Of The Limbs, which isn't really my favorite Radiohead album. Though I did like AMOK's b-sides, which I wish were more easily available in lossless digital.

In support of the reissue, Yorke will play three solo shows in the US, where he will be backed by Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich and audio visual artist Tarik Barri. He’ll play Los Angeles on December 12, Oakland on December 14 and a headline set at Day For Night Festival in Houston on December 17.

that's the song that got me into radiohead. i heard it as a single on the radio in the fall/winter of 2000 (i was 13, almost 14) and asked for Kid A for x-mas. my girlfriend at the time gave me the special "children's book" edition of the album and i became immediately obsessed with it. the whole album is tied in with memories of that winter, which was also the first time i ever used carmex for chapped lips, so the smell of it brings a rush of sound and the feeling of air after a fresh snowfall. i'm very nostalgic about the whole situation.

also, i used to try to get the DJs at my junior high dances to play "idioteque" which never went over too well.

Dryalex12

10-25-2017, 05:24 PM

If I recall correctly, the lyrics for the album are the way they are because Thom had brutal writers’ block at that point in his career. He’d write a single phrase, and later pick which ones went where almost, but not quite, at random. IF I recall correctly. I love that lyric because it’s a delightful and playful rephrasing of the idea of “I woke up on the wrong side of the bed” (or at least that’s how I’ve always taken it), but the album—because of that almost Vonnegut-meets-Twitter lyrical methodology—is full of slightly disjointed, kinda brilliant nuggets like that. Keep listening; you’ll find more.

EDIT: I checked my memory. That is what happened with the lyrics. Phrases and ideas were written out, often as single lines. When they were more complicated than that, they were literally cut up with scissors and recombined at random.

I looked it up. Sucking on Lemons is a British phrase for "being woken up on the wrong side, or looking like sh*t" and apparently Thom was very depressed during that album cycle.

Lemons are sour and they make your lips pucker.....which you also do when you are sad.

I am trying to see if Kid A is better or Amnesiac is. I feel Kid A can be listened to during night time and Amnesiac when it is raining and in the middle of the day. They are both amazing albums, but I think they are both equally good, if that makes any sense?

It's kind of two sides of the same coin for me. I think I like Kid A more overall, but they're so intertwined with each other in my mind that it's hard to think of one without the other.

I guess technically they would be B-sides, but I've always seen it as the second half of the album. There's some great tracks on there in my opinion. My favorites would probably be "Last Flowers", "Up On The Ladder", and "Bangers + Mash".

That disk originally came with the $80-something version of In Rainbows that had the album on vinyl, CD and that as a bonus disc, in a giant hardcover box/vinyl sleeve. You could only get it on their website, I think, when they launched the pay-what-you-want scheme that got a lot of attention. Some really good songs on it, a couple as good as the album tracks, just like with all their outtakes/b-sides.

Great tracks on both but I love the original In Rainbows album more, to me those fit better then the ones on the second disk, even though the second disk isnt that bad, Id still prefer the original album though.

Safe to say this is out of spite from The Hollies situation, no?

Theres some similarities (I’m no musical expert, mind you) but there’s a metric sh*t ton of songs out there that sound similar to others.

There was some pop pop song out there a few years ago (was it Blurred Lines) with a very similar situation- and I believe the lawsuit favored the plaintiff, and it didn’t sound anything like the “original” tune.

If Radiohead lost a lawsuit to The Hollies, doesn't that prove (as far as the courts are concerned) that Radiohead plagiarized The Hollies? In which case, how can Radiohead sue LDR over the same song? If they won wouldn't that mean The Hollies should be compensated, not Radiohead?

I believe the song you may be thinking of is Sam Smith's single, which sounded, melodically at least, a lot like Won't Back Down by Tom Petty.

Popular music: Everything's been done. :p

I finally picked up the 2LP + 2CD MSP today. I'd been meaning to since release but I could never find the money to set aside; had to have the big version as I feel absolutely in love with Spectre.

At this rate maybe I'll be able to afford OKNOTOK by next Christmas.

If anybody wants some good sounding live Radiohead, this tublr page (http://essentialradioheadbootlegs.tumblr.com/) is an excellent resource.

Dude. Thank you. I know quite a few songs like TLW have long, long histories as live numbers; I've made the decision to take the plunge into live concerts so if anyone wants to shoot specific show recommendations to highlight incredible versions or see how things evolved to their studio form I'm all ears.

At the moment I think Phantom Thread might be my favorite but don't know how much of that is recency coming into play. The Master was my favorite before that. You can't go wrong with any of them, though -- he's got an amazing talent at it and is one of the best people scoring films today.

For me personally, There Will Be Blood is his best work. Start there, then go to The Master. Though, I guess, now that I'm thinking about it, just go in chronological order. It's really interesting seeing his progression as a composer throughout his film career.

quite a few (creep, just, fake plastic trees, karma police, & pyramid song, to name some of them), but they also have a very large and dedicated fan base. i've only met a handful of people who don't like radiohead. when i saw them the summer before my freshman year of high school and they were touring on amnesiac, they built their own god damn stage in grant park because millennium park didn't exist yet, and the show completely sold out. it was me, my mom, four friends, and one other parent who all went together for the show, and it was nuts. if they were playing somewhere with decent sound i would have gotten tickets to see them this year, because i haven't seen them since 2004 at alpine valley (which was a good show with mediocre sound).

anyway, point being, whether or not you love radiohead, there are a f*ckton of people that do.

I'm taking the wife to Montreal for our 10 year anniversary to see both shows. We saw Radiohead last year in Seattle and they were one of the best live bands I've ever seen! I don't listen to them on my own, but old co-workers and my wife used to play them a lot so I know most of their songs. Thom's voice is incredible live which is a nice change compared to Axl Rose and Marilyn Manson's recent shows. Even Rammstein are getting boring. NIN hasn't come to Canada in 5 years so good live shows have been slim pickin's lately. Ticketmaster was a total gong show for Toronto so we made the decision to go to Montreal at the last minute, I hate their new site - Here are some Row 1 tickets - oops sorry, someone else purchased them. Boy is that Evenko ticket website a dream!

I hoped & prayed for Bodysnatchers, and got it. They sounded killer as always. So clear. Thom's voice is still so strong. Only negative was b/c it was the Sat. night show, I had alot less super fans around me and alot of assholes. I never understand these couples that never let go of each other the whole show and make a scene. Aren't you HOT? Ugh.

I know The Tourist is a rarity, but god that song is useless live. So friggin boring. Other slow songs from Radiohead can go in that spot and are much better. Spectre was really cool to hear, and the extended singalong at the end of Karma Police was great. Heard some new flourishes in Idioteque that made it enjoyable for me again. Wish I had gotten Reckoner too but can't complain.

They played "Like Spinning Plates" and "How to Disappear Completely" and I got chills multiple times throughout the whole show, which never happens for me. Also got a bunch of OK Computer songs I never heard live. Saturday I was about ten people back from the front on the floor, and it was amazing, but either the setlist didn't have the same flow or the audience just wasn't as amazing on Friday. Still, it was two at least wonderful nights, and I almost want to trek out to see them in Philadelphia if it's not sold out, it was so good. Also got lucky and had super nice fans to talk to both nights even though I'd gone alone.

Solid show at MSG last night. Thom’s voice is absolutely incredible. I wasn’t thrilled with the setlist though. No representation from Amnesiac (how is that possible) and a bit too much In Rainbows/King Of Limbs. Plus there were lots of bro’s dancing like they were at a Seaside Heights night spot. Strange vibes too; tons of people falling down like zombies and being taken out. Hoping for a better experience in Philly on August 1st.

PS- Exit Music, 2+2=5, and Optimistic were the highlights.

Yes...this. I think thats b/c we got the more casual fan on the whole bc it was Sat night. Think about how many dumb "I LOVE YOU THOOOOOM" screams we got also. And people cheering the MOMENT there's silence or a really quiet lull....regardless of the song. If you're an actual fan of this band. you know those types of reactions are the exact opposite of the what the band has always cultivated.

friday was the MSG night to see, apparently. it was the only setlist of the four NYC shows i was wowed by.

they DO tend to ignore amnesiac more than most of their material, which is baffling considering the equal representation from most other records. saw them for the first time in 2016 and they didn't touch the record at ALL.

hint: it's my favorite...

Fantastic show in Detroit last night. No Amnesiac or Pablo Honey songs, but holy wow was there a lot of Bends and HTTT. The Daily Mail was a treat, too. How to Disappear Completely had me audibly gasp; I didn't think for a minute they'd actually play it. Thom's voice has held up so well, probably due to them just doing sporadic tour dates now instead of an entire year packed full. Our unseasonably cold, gloomy day yesterday must have reminded the boys of England because they were in such a relaxed and comfortable mood. Couldn't have asked for a better set (well actually, that's a lie), and am so glad this city is finally back on their radar now.

What a cluster f*ck this morning. I was on there before they went on sale and couldn't get sh*t for 25 minutes. I was trying to get 2 tickets and it kept giving me the "another fan beat you to those tickets" nonsense. I kept trying on and off throughout the day at work and had the same thing happen a few times. Finally, 5 minutes ago or so I was able to score 2 tickets to the Boston show. They're not as close as my NIN tickets (both shows a month before), but oh well.

An EP of unreleased material from Thom's Suspiria score was just released (http://x-l-r.co/suspirialtd?fbclid=IwAR37R-2tOk1qylikEgj28XfIIZRV-4NC1LyZnlvxWmSPbApSCxMdCtZBkB4). It's mainly just extra bits and pieces of weird instrumental stuff. I wouldn't necessarily call it essential listening (especially considering how short it is), but if you're someone like me who loved the score, it's worth a spin.

And yet XL Recordings decided to do a "LIMITED" vinyl release of 1500 copies for $25. Sold out in hours and now being flipped for $100 a pop. hahahahaha

Total cash grab. 12 minutes that didn't need a vinyl release. Just listened to the EP on Spotify this morning and am now relieved that I wasn't able to snag a copy. Would never spin it. The main score is far superior. I feel bad for people that buy this second hand without having listened to it t realize what they are buying.

What's the EtS for Radiohead?

I picked up a video reel & was curious if the following is widely available or if I should bother doing a transfer.

If it is rare, @ninlive (https://www.echoingthesound.org/community/member.php?u=1141) would this be helpful for any potential NIN releases?

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1pDfzisRWUShJYYJXksQmjhcRWwmRZFAC

*edit*
Doing some research, the reel seems to be promotional assets for KID A. The "live in London" feature is segmented with fades to black after each song (idioteque/everything in its right place/how to disappear completely/morning bell/in limbo/optimistic/national anthem) with the following end credits:

https://i.imgur.com/OqjZRFel.png

The remainder of the reel has 15 promotional spots (break down/falling volcano/death bear/eyes/plains/dead air/yeti/wake up/thoms angel/tadpole monster/invasion/red pool bears/volcano zoom/live/upsidedown football) for KID A.

I don't know, how many times did you buy them? I bought them once each. But if I can buy a set with both Kid A and Amnesiac with all of their b-sides as well as unreleased racks remastered in hi-res, you bet your ass I will. The OKNOTOK Computer boxset was amazing and the remaster was great. The 3 unreleased songs were great. That studio sessions demo mixtape that came with it is f*cking amazing! On it is a piano version of Motion Picture Soundtrack from the OK Computer sessions that is absolutely beautiful. There's also the Let Down 4trk, a great early acoustic of No Surprises, a cool version of Karma Police, Are You Someone? acoustic song, early band demo of Nude, early version of The National Anthem. So many gems on that tape. To hear how that album came together behind the scenes was awesome. I listen to that mixtape quite often. The Kid A sessions were especially experimental, so I'd love to hear something like this, a studio demo sessions mixtape like OKNOTOK.

i got OKNOTOK and i'm very, very glad i did. that said, i have bought a lot of different versions of radiohead releases over the years, plus some obscure singles. but in terms of Kid A & Amnesiac in particular, here are the versions i own (each bought when they first became available)

Kid A: special edition "children's book" CD (my first ever Radiohead item!), standard CD, standard CD w/hidden booklet, 2x10" vinyl (original pressing), 2xCD/1xDVD box set
Amnesiac: special edition "library book" CD, standard CD, 2x10" vinyl (original pressing), 2xCD/1xDVD box set

anyway, i was just joking around. i love those albums so much and i'm more than happy to keep buying different versions of them. i just wish i wasn't insane hahaha

There isn't. This is from a Minidisc source, which is inherently lossy. It would be a little better in FLAC if re-transferred from the source material, but that's never going to happen.

As far as I can tell, the MiniDiscs used ATRAC1 - version 3.0 (SP mode; 292 kbit/s with a frequency cutoff of 18kHz). Theoretically, how much of an increase in quality are we talking about given the inherent limitations of the source?

I just finished MiniDisc 9. Halfway there...

Presumably not everything here was recorded to MD directly, and therefore some of the tracks (particularly the stereo soundboard recordings and unmastered studio mixes) exist at far better fidelity somewhere. But we won't ever get to hear those, most likely.

As far as ATRAC1 vs MP3 fidelity — I bet that the current passband filter models of MP3 are better, but there will still be a measurable amount of loss when transcoding, and of course artifacts associated with joint stereo mode on the tracks with a wider stereo field (I seem to recall Minidiscs didn't implement joint stereo, they either had dual channel or mono mode). But again, we'll likely never know for sure.

I'm unsure if I want to listen to this to be honest... I haven't hunted it down yet. Something about it feels like it's a bit invasive. Anyone who's worked on a long laborious studio project knows how much ridiculous sh*t winds up in the takes. It's really not meant for public consumption... and all that said, and maybe for those very reasons, I'm curious in a way that I'd be a liar to deny.

For me, listening through this has been a mix of Smashing Pumpkins and Miles Davis: countless SP bootlegs and the Miles Davis Complete box sets, to be exact. There's alternate takes, early versions, false starts, jams/doodles, stems/backing tracks, etc., etc. I'll (enjoyably) be spending the next few months with this.

A post has just gone up on their Facebook -

We got hacked last week - someone stole Thom’s minidisk archive from around the time of OK Computer, and reportedly demanded $150,000 on threat of releasing it.

So instead of complaining - much - or ignoring it, we’re releasing all 18 hours on Bandcamp in aid of Extinction Rebellion: https://radiohead.bandcamp.com (https://radiohead.bandcamp.com/)
Just for the next 18 days. So for £18 you can find out if we should have paid that ransom.
Never intended for public consumption (though some clips did reach the cassette in the OK Computer reissue) it’s only tangentially interesting. And very, very long. Not a phone download. Rainy out, isn’t it though?
Jx

Pretty cool that they've done this.

What i'd give for this with NIN...then i laughed at myself for even thinking Trent would keep even a small amount of this sh*t on anything even remotely hackable!

Sounds like a real thing that definitely happened lol

Are you implying that they lied about it? Why would they do that? The proceeds from the bandcamp sales aren't even going to the band, it goes to charity.

And then you remember that Getting Smaller leaked onto the net because a working mix was on a CD in his car's disc drive and the valet lifted it...

has anyone downloaded the "official" FLACs, is it really an improvement?

well technically speaking minidiscs, as a format, are largely forgotten about.

It's a small improvement, but the thing to remember is that the sources are not lossless. Also, there was 56:53 of (uncleared) samples cut from the official release. It's stilll more than worth $23.

Also depends what method was used to extract the MDs. I did a project recently and it was remarkably hard to do a full fidelity digital extraction. I suspect Radiohead haven’t (or their archive copy would be atrac) so likely an analogue recording.

They've also added mastering moves (including a bit of limiting) to the official version. It's a smoother listen overall, but some of the full band tracks are slightly less dynamic, I think.

I used Audacity to check the first 3 (MD111-MD113): there is difference in the left and right channels. I still suspect this was recorded in SP mode (5:1 compression) @ 292 kbps.

So, it seems that Thom Yorke really liked Year Zero's ARG and he is doing his own for his new solo album.

I'd say it's likely the only time you'll see Thom with a guitar again is when he's fronting Radiohead.

I pre-ordered the Anima vinyl, but passed on the Greek Theater shows, as I caught him last December at the Orpheum in LA.

The short film/triple music video they released on Netflix is pretty cool. Awesome choreography.

Still on first listen of the album. Pitchfork was correct when they said basically where Atoms For Peace left off (not that that is a bad thing).

Basically a Thom Yorke X Boards of Canada collab...

My first listen of a Thom Yorke solo album usually end up in frustration or boredom. But the further the album went, the more the atmosphere and sounds made sense, the easier it got. Very Atom for Peaces like. Which I end up loving. I will listen at least a second time.

Also, Aenima, Anima. Alright I'm done.

Really liking the new album. Much more punchy and energetic than the previous album, which, while it had its moments, felt fairly regressive. This album feels like it's going forward, backwards, and side to side and I'm all in for it.

Never been the biggest fan of Thom's solo stuff, but this album really does it for me. I agree with what all the reviews seem to be saying that it's his first solo album where it feels complete and not like a bunch of half finished demos.

As uneasy as the album may be, Thom Yorke finds a way to pull you into his journey and pushes your musical boundaries. And even though not everything is joy, I still find some comfort in his melodies. I love Anima. I won't listen to it everyday, but the experience was worth it.

I saw Thom Yorke last night. You gotta see this show. Tarik Barri (the third guy) creates incredible visual contents. With 5 non-Radiohead albums to cover, there are a lot to digest. I thought I was familiar with everything, but maybe one song or two slipped my knowledge (either from Suspiria or a b-side). It was a nice change of pace from Radiohead and I didn't expect to appreciate as much as I did. My wife came with me and she knew one song and saw the Netflix special, but she enjoyed it all the way.

Go check some youtube, it's worth it.

Great show last night in Seattle. I've seen Radiohead a handful of times since 2001, and it was cool to see Thom in a smaller venue and very different format. Dawn Chorus and Unmade were great, intimate performances.
He apparently came out about a half hour after the show ended and signed things for people who were still hanging around, in case anyone going to an upcoming show is into the autographs.
